2000 Words On “Derivative Bullshit,” “WebTV,” and “Online Content”
The Past
So apparently I pissed of half of the known internet today. I looked it right in the eyes and told it yes, its ass did look fat in those jeans. In other words I gave my honest opinion without regard to feelings, sentiment, or repercussion.
In return, I got called a number of colorful names by people whose feelings I’d hurt. Some were semi-sarcastic, some were very spirited, and all were probably partially truthful. Many people agreed with me though.
Now the video in question was recorded back in May but was reposted to twitter this morning. A half hour later, it was the spark for a firestorm of discussion, commentary, argumentation, and the occasional brief moment of agreement.
Some really great thoughts here. For me, as a story-teller first, I wonder if those native advantages to online content that Barret references actually enhance an immersive experience, or if they’re still a distraction or gimmick. I personally haven’t felt a visceral reaction to interactive elements in web video (yet). I’m not moved by ARG’s or flash apps — at least not in the video space. That’s not to say I haven’t been excited by the evolution of the medium. The “cool” factor is one thing, but I want these methods to enhance a story, not distract from it. Our interactive-vocabulary hasn’t evolved to that point yet. Until interaction is as natural, native, and ingrained, I worry it’s going to continue to be a distraction. We can’t be surprised that your regular DIY filmmaker isn’t also a UI genius.
I guess I don’t want to slight the idea of online distribution. It’s still an exciting opportunity for even the most traditional filmmakers.
